I've always been interested in history - particularly Saxon - and when I got some redundancy pay decided to buy one or two. I then thought that maybe as my finances dwindled I might be able to find my own, so got in contact with my local detecting club. As I didn't drive, distance was a bit of a problem. At this stage I discovered that a colleague at work was into beach detecting, and I persuaded him to try his hand at field detecting. In my naivety I nobly decided that if I found anything other than Saxon I'd be happy to give it away. We ended up at the club and met other enthusiasts there - it was great! But a couple of years of hard graft on some fairly unproductive sites soon made me realise that a hammered coin of any description was an achievement and not to be treated so lightly. Took me about 5 years to eventually find my own Saxon coin though...
